You are seated in the left side with the clip board in your hand and one of the learners seated beside you holding the wheel as though it is going to fly away. That calm voice you hear? It was trained–if you wish to know more tips and secrets, and then you can click reference to get further instructions.
The initial move towards training the driver is to deprive yourself of habits, to the very bare bones. Stillness, half-breasted mirror-tests, careless driving–it is all in plain sight. The trainees undergo stringent driving training in which speed is not a matter but smoothness is. A jolty movement deduces points even prior to the start of the lesson.
The gatekeeper in the UK is the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. It is divided into three stages i.e. theory, driving ability and instructional ability. Fail it and it must be re-done. There are no shortcuts. Advanced driving exam is very different as compared to an exam by learners. you must read the road before you, and anticipate trouble, and to go slowly under control. Commentary driving is the most significant and you are talking what you see. “Cyclist ahead. Junction on the left. Car slowing suddenly.” It not only makes seasoned drivers humble, but it also teaches you to anticipate which is not only responding, but also anticipating.
Then comes teaching. This stage surprises many. Doing a maneuver is one thing but explaining it to someone who has no idea of left and right is another thing. The trainees learn the coaching techniques. Open questions are more effective compared to lectures. “What did you notice there?” There is no better way of saying it than You messed up.
One of the trainers said that you are a teacher, part therapist. Students will present themselves with nerves or be overconfident or both. Some freeze at roundabouts. Some others think that they are race drivers. A trainer also trains you to balance between the two extremes amicably. Risk management is hard drilled. There are dual controls in case of emergency and non-ornament. Timing is critical. Get in too soon and you stop learning. It was too late, and metal against metal. The trainees practise emergency stops and calm commands. Voice steady. No shouting. A tiny automobile is loud in the transmission of panic.
The paperwork is also present: lesson plans, progress records, legal responsibilities. You are making motorists with families and freight trucks on the road. And that is a curse on your shoulders. The fact that there are business skills is also important. Many of the instructors are independent contractors. The training involves the prices, reservations and cancelations within last minute. “Sorry, I forgot” happens. You are taught to work, and not to be impatient.
Fatigue is real. Six lessons per day drain life out. You repeat the same junction till it rings in your sleep. Nevertheless, attention is needed by every student. Consistency is key. Finally, the reward comes. One of the students who used to be held by every hill will now run smoothly. Test day arrives. They pass. They are smiling like you have brought them a new book. You smile, you maybe you jester, and it takes your heart right out of pride.
The type of driving teachers developed is not only qualified drivers. It instills patience, quick judgment and unspoken tolerance. The automobile seat is turned into a moving classroom. After the engine is switched off, every peaceful correction is indicated.
